Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1952, Rachel Bassan is the granddaughter of Jewish Russian-Ukrainian immigrants. She dedicated herself to teaching English for 25 years and another 24 to professional Tourism. She majored in Languages at PUC-Rio. Her actual debut in the literary circle began in 2005 with a three-volume collection of Crônicas de Oficina organized by Carlos Eduardo Novaes, a well known Brazilian writer. In 2012, she published Nada é por Acaso: Crônicas da Vida by Torre Publishing House.
Her sense of curiosity to know more about her Jewish roots along with her keen interest on History and traveling led her to Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and back to New York. After doing extensive field research, readings and interviews, Rachel wrote her first novel, Bela from Odessa, a saga set during the Russian Revolution.
